Are Magic Particles 2D or Are They 3D?

Pardon me if I ask this question, but it is not clear to me if Magic Particles is capable of creating 3D volumetric effects.
Assume that Magic Particles is somehow integrated, through its API, in a game engine. Will it then be able to create 3D efects, or will it just be a succession of 2D images?
Any clarifications would be greatly appreciated.

The currently version of Magic Particles is 2D, but I am developing 3D version now. You may wait for 3D version.
To use 2D version of Magic Particles in 3D game you can present the particles as billboards.
The particles are rotated around Y-axis usually to emulate the volume.

I am working every day to finish new version. It is not easy. I hope the new version with 3D will be released by October.
