Character set changed on update?

I just agreed to let Magic Particles update itself and the setup was in strange characters.
Afterwards the application is similarly strange: I imagine that it is trying to render Russian?
I can't read the menus, there is no entry that says 'English', the registry and Program Files folders don't have anything that might be a language setting, so I guess I need to re-install from the web site.
I'm using Vista 32 Home, Magic Particles 1.6 Free edition
